Our Mission

This page was set up by Jan and Matt Flewellen in memory of their son Caleb, who lost his battle to Leigh’s Disease, a form of Mitochondrial disease on the 6th of January 2010. This webpage along with the ‘Million Dollars for Mito’ fundraising venture, and a bunch of passionate people aim to: give hope, raise much needed awareness and provide support to the many other children and families in NZ that face the challenges of this disease.

Mitochondrial disease

Did you know? Every twenty minutes a child is born who will develop Mitochondrial Disease by the age of 16!

Mitochondrial disease is the name given to a group of over 100 genetic disorders that impair mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial diseases are degenerative and diseases of the mitochondria tend to affect most the cells where energy demand is greatest, namely the cells in the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidneys and endocrine and respiratory systems and the symptoms may vary depending on which cells are affected.  At present, there is no cure, treatment is limited, and the diagnosis is difficult, costly & often missed.
